"To name oneself is the first act of both the poet and the revolutionary. When we take away the right to an individual name, we symbolically take away the right to be an individual.."
--Erica Jong, How to Save Your Own Life

List of Slaves with Documented Surnames

Records of slave surnames are rare. Most slaves are identified in official documents with only a given, or first, name. Frequently even those names have been shortened into nicknames or familiar names. The following slaves, however, are identified in official documents by both a given and a surname. This is important because it allows us to track them through subsequent census records and other official records.

To see the records for the slaves listed, just click on the highlighted slaveholder's surname. You will be taken to the first listing for that slaveholder.
