"Landmarks of the Underground Railroad" Educator's Workshop
"Landmarks of the Underground Railroad: From Christiana to Harpers
Ferry" (July 16-20 or 23-27, 2007) This week-long, intensive workshop,
hosted by the House Divided Project at Dickinson College and sponsored
by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will challenge the
way K-12 teachers have been presenting the Underground Railroad. Site
visits integrated with documentary evidence will push participants to
broaden their understanding of what did - and did not - constitute an
Underground Railroad escape. Participants will discover that fugitives
and the northerners who protected them were often as likely to fight as
flee when confronted by slave catchers in the 1850s. Study of two nearby
historic sites, Christiana, Pennsylvania, and Harpers Ferry, West
Virginia will provide new insights into the aggressive operations of the
Underground Railroad and help frame the story of the coming of the Civil
War. The workshop provides four (4) graduate-level credit hours (or the
equivalent of a one-semester course) for all participants who
successfully complete the thirty (30) hours of professional development
instruction and an independent lesson plan project. $500 stipend and
travel expenses are provided. Deadline for applications is March 15,
2007. Project Director, Matthew Pinsker. For more details, please go to:
